“Bringing sustainability into the core of our business”

Mineral Circles Bearings (MCB), one of the leading distributors of aftermarket products in the Middle East and Africa, undertook the Inteliam business and sustainability assessment. Hassanein Alwan, Managing Director of the company, agreed to share his view on the solution and the partnership.

Why did you launch the Inteliam evaluation process?

In 2020, we envisioned our goals for 2030, marking the beginning of a significant journey. We fostered a complete arrangement to accomplish our 2030 targets, with sustainability as one of its centre points, ensuring we operate responsibly, minimising the negative impacts on our stakeholders, and contributing to a more sustainable future. We analysed our existing operations and processes, aiming to enhance sustainability initiatives such as discouraging one-time use of plastic, implementing proper waste disposal, repurposing 98% of our pallets, and minimising environmental impact in our new facilities using green construction products. However, we recognised the need for external expertise to guide us to achieve our sustainability goals and identified Inteliam as the ideal partner due to their tailored approach and deep understanding of our market.

What does the Inteliam evaluation consist of?

The four main pillars of Inteliam's holistic evaluation approach are business expertise, financial measures, sustainability, and corporate processes.

Their holistic approach to sustainability is what I respect most: it's in line with our vision, values, and conviction that it's about more than just eco-friendly projects.

Our sustainable journey has benefited greatly from Inteliam's assistance in defining our present position and future course. This evaluation served as a wake-up call, highlighting our areas of strength and growth, challenging our viewpoints, and validating some of our current strategies.

How did you implement it?

We assigned a committed individual with strong relationships to manage the assessment of both internal and external business processes. Our lack of documentation for sustainability projects was one important lesson we learned. Inteliam's solution underlined the importance of documentation, leading us to produce more substantial evidence of our efforts.

What are the results and the next steps for MCB?

We have been able to reshape our mindset, comprehend where we are right now, and create a strategic plan thanks to this assessment. The recommendations from Inteliam were enlightening and pointed out areas of improvement. As a result, we established our own research and innovation division, emphasising sustainability as a fundamental component. Transitioning to solar energy is one of the ongoing efforts that promises a major reduction in carbon emissions.

What is your vision of the Inteliam partnership?

We needed to benchmark ourselves against the industry to assess where we are now. This collaboration, in my opinion, will make it easier to get in touch with more organisations that have similar values to our own. We're just getting started and are eager to improve our score next year!
